How it works
Who pays. Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs at the end of Ramadan — and it is paid on behalf of every member of the household, including children and dependents.
The amount. One sa’ — roughly 2.5 to 3 kg, or about four handfuls of two cupped hands — of the staple food of your region: wheat, rice, dates, barley, or raisins. This tool converts that amount into today’s cash value so you can give money instead of food, which many scholars permit.
When to pay. It becomes due at the sunset of the last day of Ramadan and must reach the poor before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. You may pay any time during Ramadan, though the last few days are ideal so distribution is timely.
