Sheep & Goats
40 is the nisab; one sheep is due at each traditional tier.
Sheep & goat tiers
- 1–39: No Zakat due
- 40–120: 1 sheep
- 121–200: 2 sheep
- 201–399: 3 sheep
- 400+: 1 sheep per additional 100
Cattle (Cows & Bulls)
30 is the nisab; a one-year-old calf is a tabi’, a two-year-old cow is a musinnah.
Cattle tiers
- 1–29: No Zakat due
- 30–39: 1 one-year-old calf (tabi’)
- 40–59: 1 two-year-old cow (musinnah)
- 60–69: 2 one-year-old calves
- 70–79: 1 musinnah + 1 tabi’
- 80–89: 2 musinnah
- 90–99: 3 tabi’
- 100–109: 2 tabi’ + 1 musinnah
- 110–119: 2 musinnah + 1 tabi’
- 120+: one tabi’ per full 30 head and one musinnah per full 40 head, combined to fit your herd
- At 120 exactly: either 4 tabi’ or 3 musinnah may be given (this calculator shows 3 musinnah)
Camels
5 is the nisab; small herds pay in sheep, larger herds in she-camels.
Camel tiers
- 1–4: No Zakat due
- 5–9: 1 sheep
- 10–14: 2 sheep
- 15–19: 3 sheep
- 20–24: 4 sheep
- 25–35: 1 one-year-old she-camel (bint makhad)
- 36–45: 1 two-year-old she-camel (bint labun)
- 46–60: 1 three-year-old she-camel (hiqqah)
- 61–75: 1 four-year-old she-camel (jadh’ah)
- 76–90: 2 bint labun
- 91–120: 2 hiqqah
- 121+: 1 bint labun per 40 head + 1 hiqqah per 50 head
Understanding Livestock Zakat
Free-grazing animals. Livestock Zakat applies to sa’imah animals — those that graze freely on pasture for most of the year, kept for breeding or milk.
The hawl. The animals must be owned for one full lunar year before Zakat becomes due on them.
Working animals are exempt. Animals used for plowing, transportation, or personal use are generally exempt from Zakat.
Trade animals. Animals bought and sold as trade goods follow business Zakat rules (2.5% of their market value) instead of the head-count tiers.
The tiers. The thresholds and amounts come from authentic hadith and are agreed upon by all four major schools of thought. Small camel herds pay in sheep; from 25 camels upward, she-camels of specified ages are due.
